JOUR2046 Advanced News and Feature Writing (Chinese) (3 units)
This course aims to develop students’ advanced skills in finding and gathering information for producing news and feature stories in Chinese. Students are introduced to specialised reporting and covering beats. The emphasis will be put on developing students’ ability to generate ideas for news and feature stories and apply various journalistic tools to conduct in-depth interviews and archival research and present their findings logically and creatively. The course is designed to provide information and support for students in their concurrent work in the San Po Yan as well as to help prepare students for their internships and honours projects.

JOUR2076 Data Journalism (3 units)
With vast amounts of data now openly accessible online and the development of infographic technologies to visualize data, data journalism – the use of numerical data in the production and distribution of news – has become a growing field of rising importance. The aim of the course is to examine data journalism at its core through case studies and hands-on practice of data skills through tools such as Microsoft Excel, Google Trend, DivoMiner, R/Python and Tableau. Students will learn how to conceptualize, design, visualize, and produce data-driven news stories.

JOUR2077 Chinese News Reporting and Writing (3 units)
This course introduces the principles and techniques of gathering, selecting and presenting information in a style appropriate to online and print journalism in Chinese. Emphasis is put on stimulating the students’ interest in social events around them. The course prepares students for more advanced forms of journalism taught in later classes. Reference is made to the local context in the discussion of the news language.

JOUR2085 English News Reporting and Writing (3 units)
This course introduces students to the basic journalistic principles and the skills and techniques of news and feature writing in English to form the foundation upon which the professional four-year journalism programme is built. The course prepares students for more advanced forms of journalism taught in later classes and for their future work on print and online student publications, their internship and honours project.

JOUR2087 Multimedia and Multiplatform Journalism (3 units)
This course provides introductory hands-on experience reporting and producing news stories through many different digital storytelling techniques, including photography, audio, video, writing and animation, as well as understanding how and where to publish those works of journalism across various traditional and digital platforms. Students will be expected to work both as reporters (i.e. finding and gathering information with modem digital newsroom tools) and editors (i.e. processing and producing stories using relevant software) on individual and group assignments. This course will foster students’ story-telling and critical-thinking skills as they learn to choose appropriate platforms, integrate multimedia content and apply traditional reporting methods to new technology. Students will also create an online portfolio of original journalism work to be used throughout their four-year studies, in particular when applying for internships in Year 3.

JOUR2095 Advanced Broadcast Production (3 units)
This course aims at enhancing students’ skills in conducting research, writing, videography and broadcasting, and will have two focuses. The first is to refine the skills necessary to produce a newscast, including live reporting, reporting fast-breaking news, serial reporting, multiple-location production and covering the local implications of world news events. The application of traditional broadcast journalism skills in the social media era, such as curation of audience-generated content, audience engagement and crowdsourcing, will also be emphasised. The second is to develop students’ ability to produce a four to give minutes long video-based news stories independently. Run concurrently with the practicum courses, this course will prepare them for their internships and honours projects.

JOUR2096 Advanced News and Feature Writing (English) (3 units)
This course builds on the first professional English news writing course and aims to provide advanced skills in the principles and techniques of finding, gathering and producing news and features in English. Students are also introduced to specialized reporting and covering beats, with special attention paid to the local context to establish the knowledge required for the journalism profession in Hong Kong and reporting on Hong Kong for an international audience. Students are also introduced to more complex forms of news writing, including longform stories, and how to use digital tools to report on a breaking story. The course is designed to provide information and support for students in their concurrent work in The Young Reporter practicum as well as to help prepare students for their internships and honours projects.

JOUR2097 Advanced News and Feature Writing (Finance) (3 units)
This course equips students with the basic knowledge of investment vehicles to prepare them for working as financial journalists. After acquiring the basic investment knowledge, students are taught how to write different financial news, such as corporate financing, company earnings and economic stories.

JOUR2105 Visual Journalism (3 units)
To enhance student’s awareness of the possibility as well as the limitation of images in news reporting, and to develop their ability in producing multi-media report of news events independently. In response to the digital technology that has become widely used in today’s news business, this course will equip students with basic knowledge in handling, transmitting and preserving the quality of image files captured by digital imagery devices as well as mastering the basis of multi-media news presentation.

JOUR2106 Data Visualization (3 units)
Data journalism draws on a wide variety of skills – from simple data collection to statistical analysis to graphic design to coding and programming. It is impossible to fit everything that ambitious data news projects might need into one semester. Further to the introductory course of data journalism (JOUR2076), this advanced course emphasizes a higher level of understanding of data, including more sophisticated visualization tools for news production. The aim of the course is to examine data journalism at its core through case studies and hands-on practice of data visualization skills. Throughout the course, students will learn how to conceptualize, design, visualize, and produce more sophisticated data-based new stories. Students will end the semester by publishing an interactive data-driven news project. To cope with the industrial trend and market demands, open source web technology will be used as the base for instructing data visualization. Programming language includes HTML/CSS/Javascript, other technology stack includes Git, NodeJS, Shell.

JOUR2107 Introduction to Journalism and Communications (3 units)
This course is one of the bridging courses set up for Computer Science students under the Interdisciplinary Concentration on Data Media and Communications scheme. The course is to introduce students who have had no prior experience with the field of journalism and communication to its diverse areas of study and its fundamental concepts. It can also provide a common foundation for students by presenting both a social process and a professional practice of journalism and communication.

JOUR2116 Finance and Economics for Journalists (3 units)
This course introduces students to the basic knowledge in finance and economics which a journalist should know. The course also teaches students the basic skills and techniques of financial news writing.

JOUR2117 Broadcast Reporting and Production (3 units)
This is one of the two introductory broadcast journalism major core courses for all journalism students to choose from. It provides students with the basic theoretical and practical training required to produce broadcast news for mainly radio and television, including both their conventional and digital or multimedia platforms. The emphasis is on mastery of basic broadcast principles and skills in conducting research, script-writing, visual and audio storytelling as well as using recording equipment and the relevant software. Students will be expected to apply the knowledge and skills acquired, including conducting research, writing the script, recording, filming and producing, to produce a simple story for broadcast on different platforms of radio and television.

JOUR2125 Photojournalism and Documentary Photography (3 units)
This course introduces students to basic and more advanced journalistic visual storytelling by exploring the history of photojournalism, reviewing the various aspects of contemporary photojournalism for traditional and digital news media, understanding the difference between photojournalism and documentary photography, and more critically analysing the importance and influence that news photography can have on society, business, politics and global issues. Students also will engage in personal practical assignments of news portraiture, single photos, and photographic storytelling, along with understanding and discussing the ethical principles and moral decisions photojournalists have to make.

JOUR3016 Political Economy for Journalists (3 units)
This course provides a comprehensive study of the economies and politics from the prospective of greater China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), hence the basics political and economic framework of the three areas and how they interact with one another and other global powers. As these areas are becoming the major challenging spots journalists needed to address nowadays. Some journalistic skills and insights will also be introduced/shared in the course.

JOUR3046 Comparative Perspectives on Media (3 units)
This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the outcomes of different kinds of politics, economics, history, culture, social organization and technology on the format of the news media in any one country at any given time. It introduces students to the development and current status of a variety of national (and territorial) news media systems and to the major concepts and theories that have been articulated to explain their individual natures and the differences between them. The course encourages students to critically analyse and compare different news media systems using the theories and concepts taught and to examine the key idea of freedom of the press in order to deepen their understanding of the news they are getting and compare it to news in other places round the world.

JOUR3047 News Anchoring (3 units)
This course provides basic training in news anchoring. It introduces the role of a news anchor and equips students with related professional skills including pronunciation, on-camera performance, use of autocue or teleprompter, conducting interviews and note-taking, image building, news wrapping up and news ad-libbing. Special emphasis is given to acquiring hands-on experience of news anchoring. This is a core course for Broadcast Journalism concentration students.

JOUR3057 Finance and Investment (3 units)
This course introduces students to the basic business and finance theories and issues to prepare them for working on The Young Financial Post and the local and foreign media when they graduate. The course emphasises practical knowledge that will equip students to work for print media and multimedia. It also examines basic ethical issues in journalism. This is a core course for Financial Journalism major students.

JOUR3075 Economics for Financial Journalists (3 units)
This course introduces students to the basic economic theories and issues to prepare them for working on The Young Financial Post, and the local and foreign media when they graduate. The course emphasises practical knowledge that will equip students to work for print media and multimedia as financial journalists.

JOUR3077 Magazine Design and Editing (3 units)
This course introduces students to the concepts, skills, practice, and art of designing and editing a magazine. The focus is on designing and editing techniques appropriate for various types of magazines, practical experience, and creativity. The course will also examine the social, economic and cultural role of magazines in the Hong Kong context. This is an elective course available to all Journalism Option students.

JOUR3085 Media Transformation and Institutional Change in Historical Perspective (3 units)
This course provides a scrutiny of the interactions between the media and society in different stages of development in Chinese history. It examines how institutional settings have shaped and transformed media operations and their social objectives since the emergence of modern newspapers in mid-nineteenth century China. It also assesses the value and functions of the media in achieving institutional change in both mainland China and Hong Kong. Through an understanding of history, students will become aware of the significance of the press to societal progress as well as it limitations.

JOUR3095 Business and Financial News Reporting in English (3 units)
This course aims to equip students with the basic skills needed to pursue a career as a business and financial journalist. Students will learn how to cover the global economy and financial markets, including the performance of listed companies, in English. They will learn to use and interpret financial data provided by Bloomberg Terminals through turning them into compelling news and feature stories. Emphasis will be put on developing students’ skills in cultivating sources and writing, reporting and editing business stories.

JOUR3096 Current Affairs and News Analysis (3 units)
This is a course to help students develop news literacy. News is essential to people’s everyday life. It informs people about the world and help people make decisions and take actions. Reading news wisely and consuming news effectively is a life skill that requires proper training. For journalism students, understanding current affairs and developing good news sense is vital for their career development. The aim of this course is to cultivate students’ news reading habit, enhance their knowledge about current affairs and build up their news analytical skills so that they can better understand, analyse, use and monitor news in their daily lives. The course is divided into six parts. The first and second parts address the importance of news literacy and the necessity of cultivating daily news reading habit. While the third part discusses current affairs, the fourth part introduces news analytical skills. The fifth part is about theories and key concepts of news. The sixth part is concerned with active news audience and their role in news criticism and news monitoring.

JOUR3097 Current Hong Kong Issues for Communicators (3 units)
This course aims to equip students with a solid understanding of major social, cultural, economic and political developments of Hong Kong that are crucial to their work as communication professionals. Students will learn to critically appraise the forces that shaped these developments and the policy dilemmas that beset Hong Kong in the past, present and future.

JOUR3105 Current Issues in Journalism (3 units)
The aim of this course is to involve top journalists and senior news executives to examine the challenges and problems Hong Kong news media are facing. The outstanding journalists are also expected to share their experiences and crafts of making good news stories. The course will cover current issues of the news industry and controversial cases in journalism. it provides a good opportunity for journalism students to get in touch with outstanding practitioners in the local news industry as the practitioners will discuss their mission and vision concerning the news profession.

JOUR3106 Images of Media in Popular Culture (3 units)
This course will explore and analyse the varied and conflicting images of media in global popular culture, with an emphasis on depiction on film, and their impact on public perception of journalists and other media practitioners. Through applying historical context and critical analysis of the roles, topics and messages portrayed, students will gain a critical understanding of the popular representation of media and its complex relationship with the public.

JOUR3107 Media, Technology and Globalisation (3 units)
Each epoch has a dominant medium and develops a group of dominant media institutions. This course examines the development of media and communication technologies in contemporary society and explores their socio-cultural impacts. It also introduces the major media institutions in various media ages. It has several tasks: (1) to provide a basic understanding about media and communication technologies in historical and global perspectives; (2) to guide the students to evaluate the sociocultural impacts of these communication media, help them to understand the relationships between communication systems and social change; and (3) to familiarize students with representative media institutions and media organizations in contemporary society.

JOUR3115 Media Management (3 units)
The 21st century is the age of knowledge society. It is also a networked society. This is an introductory course to study news media management in an era of change. The primary purpose is to examine and analyse the new challenges being posed by political, economic, and technological changes in the new millennium to news media management in Hong Kong. Through the course, it is hoped that students can better understand the basic principles of news media management in a new media environmental context.
The course is divided into five parts. The first lays out the theoretical foundations of media management. The second introduces the changing media environment. The third part is designed to provide students with theories and basic principles of media management. The fourth part is about entrepreneurship. The fifth part discusses the essential areas of media management activities.

JOUR3117 News Translation (3 units)
This course aims at enhancing the student’s ability in handling information for news purpose in the bilingual context of Hong Kong. Emphasis is put on developing the student’s sensitivity to the difference between the Chinese and English language and awareness of the cultural role of the news translator. Against this background, principles and methods appropriate to a variety of contexts of news translation are introduced. This is an elective course for all Journalism Option students.

JOUR3125 Strategic Television Communication (3 units)
As the television industry has undergone great changes in recent years, the course is designed to introduce students to what constitutes “television” as a strategic, economic, political, cultural set of practices and experiences and its profound effects on all walks of life. Students will be guided to study the history of television development in Hong Kong, contemporary television programming, as example in television news, infotainment programming and entertainment programming from a critical perspective. Students will gain an overview of the television industry in Hong Kong.

JOUR3126 Visual Literacy: Critical Appreciation of Photos (3 units)
More and more photos are around us nowadays. They are in newspapers, magazines, posters, outdoor ads or on the Internet. It is important to learn how to analyse these visual images. The course has several aims: (1) understand the aesthetic study of photos/learn how to appreciate good photos; (2) understand the software in modifying photos and to acquire the skills in modifying photos; (3) learn how to distinguish real photos from fake/artificial constructs of photos and to criticize/critically analyse them; and (4) explore the social and cultural values of photos.

JOUR3135 Analytical and Opinion Writing (3 units)
This course makes a nice sequel to the introductory news writing class. Students will receive advanced training in writing news analysis, editorials, and commentaries about current events, people, and social phenomena in the greater China area. The primary focus will be on political and economic factors that shape public opinion and community development. Approximately the first six weeks of the course will be devoted to analytical writing and the remainder of the class will focus on opinion writing. The main objective of this course is to equip students with analytical skills to interpret events based on full knowledge and depth comprehension.

JOUR3136 International News in a Globalized World (3 units)
The aim of this course is for students to understand how international news has developed into its current form, how it is practised today and its role and meaning in international society, politics and economy. Students will also critically analyse indepth media coverage of current events of international interest and examine how they are reported by international media and consumed by a global audience. Students will research, background and examine selected current events with a view to appreciating the diversity of coverage and approaches.

JOUR3137 Journalism and Communication Theory (3 units)
This course examines various theoretical perspectives and practices regarding the performance, role, functions, and effects of journalism and media in modern society. It has three primary tasks: (1) to provide a basic understanding of journalism and mass media as social institutions; (2) to give students an ability to critically evaluate the interplay between journalism and the larger socio-political environment; and (3) to enhance students’ knowledge about the production, content, meaning, and impact of news.

JOUR3145 Investigative Reporting (Chinese) (3 units)
This course aims at introducing the students to advanced level of news digging, investigative reporting and news writing. Students will learn to master and apply basic investigative tools and techniques to their own stories. The course stimulates thinking and cultivates a critical mind regarding the form as well as the content of news making. The course also guides the students to develop a systematic approach to reporting and producing investigative stories. Reference to the Hong Kong context is emphasised.

JOUR3146 Investigative Reporting (English) (3 units)
This course aims to introduce students to advanced levels of newswriting and reporting as it applies to investigative and in-depth journalism. Students will apply investigative tools and techniques to their own reporting as they develop a systematic approach to uncovering a story. The course’s objective is to stimulate critical and creative thinking and cultivate a critical mind regarding the form as well as the content of investigative reporting. This course will also look at how investigative and longform journalism work together. The class aims to prepare students for their Journalism Honours Project. Reference to Hong Kong content is emphasised.

JOUR3147 Investigative Reporting (Finance) (3 units)
This course first focuses on the analysis techniques required by financial journalists, particularly on the interpretation of corporate financial performance. Students are further taught investigative forms of financial news writing on specialized topics such as banking, retailing and property markets. Critical thinking is encouraged and ethical issues are discussed. Special attention is paid to the local context to establish the knowledge required for financial journalists in Hong Kong.

JOUR3155 Investigative Reporting for Data and Media Communication (2 units)
This course aims to teach students how to find prospective stories through data identification and mining, how to recognize when a story should be a long-term investigative project, how to use data and shoe leather journalism methods to form the backbone of a story, and how to identify multiple ways of reporting a long-term investigation.

JOUR3157 Law and Ethics for Journalists (3 units)
This subject provides some in-depth knowledge of laws affecting the practice of journalism. It will also cover major ethical issues faced by local journalists. Its emphasis is on current developments and trends in Hong Kong.

JOUR3165 Unlocking Finance (3 units)
The course delivers practical knowledge that will equip students to understand and analyse different financial statements. Emphasis will be made on how to discover the irregularities and manipulations in the financial statements.

JOUR3166 Strategic Investments and Contemporary Economics (3 units)
The course delivers practical knowledge making students to understand and able to analyse different types of investments. The course also equips students with contemporary economic knowledge to interpret the current local and international economic issues.

JOUR3167 News Documentary (3 units)
This course introduces the knowledge and skills of producing a news documentary and how it differs from other genres of documentary films. Students will learn the skills and techniques of researching, shooting and producing a 10-13 minutes long news documentary on a current issue. Run concurrently with practicum courses, this course helps to prepare students for their honours project.

JOUR3175 Contemporary Issues in Journalism (1 unit)
Journalism as a practice is deeply embedded in local and global dynamics that are constantly in flux. Major new issues and challenges emerge almost every year, raising important debates about journalism’s practices, social roles, and professional ethics. This course will cover one theme or topic of contemporary relevance for students to study. The precise topic will change periodically in order to keep up with local and global developments, and in line with instructors’ expertise. Illustrative examples include: “Media and Climate Science Denial”; “Media and Deglobalisation”; “Whistleblowers and Leaks”; and “Platformisation of News Consumption”.
This is a conceptual course. It will relate the chosen topic to relevant theories and concepts in the academic literature, drawing from media/communication studies and other fields. It will thus equip students with the best available analytical tools and bodies of knowledge to help them understand the topic in question. In addition, it will sharpen their critical reasoning skills, encouraging them to see beneath the surface of issues in the news.

This course provides the skills necessary to see written copy from submission to publication, including the organization and improvement of written material as well as the technical processes through which writing is transferred to the printed page and online. Editing, packaging and integration of multimedia elements, including audio, video, photos and infographics, is introduced. Exercises in digital production and design are provided.

Students learn how to report for the Broadcast News Network (BNN), and experimental broadcast news channel that transmits regular news casts, and its associated digital news platforms. Reporting will be for sound, video and online media.

JOUR3266 Journalism Practicum (Finance) (2 units)
This course aims to develop students’ skills in financial newspaper production and financial news website management through working as reporters and editors for the print and online editions of The Young Financial Post, the Department’s student financial newspaper and its associated digital financial news platforms.

JOUR3275 Immersive Journalism (3 units)
This is an introductory course which provides students with the basic practical background required to produce immersive journalism content using virtual reality. The emphasis is on mastery in immersive storytelling, use of recording equipment and the relevant software.

JOUR3276 Data Story Laboratory I (3 units)
The course focuses on incorporating data into investigative and explanatory journalism in order to introduce students to the understanding and application of data for news reporting. The course will also touch upon data source gathering, data analysis, data visualization, story-telling, news dissemination and audience engagement. Students are expected to find and utilise different sources and forms of data to provide evidence in news reporting, as well as creating data visualisations as a source of information. This course will get students familiar with the general landscape of data news producing and delivery.

JOUR3277 Data Story Laboratory II (3 units)
The course focuses on incorporating data into investigative and explanatory journalism in order to introduce students to the understanding and application of data for news reporting. The course will also touch upon data source gathering, data analysis, data visualization, story-telling, news dissemination and audience engagement. Students are expected to find and utilise different sources and forms of data to provide evidence in news reporting, as well as creating data visualisations as a source of information. This course will get students familiar with the general landscape of data news producing and delivery.

JOUR3285 Financial Data and Market Sentiment Analysis (3 units)
This course provides a systematic study of the principles and techniques of financial data search and application. Students will learn to obtain and interpret financial data in preparation for a career in financial journalism. Through case studies and projects, students will master basic investigative tools and techniques to analyse financial market performance. The course also introduces basic approaches of market sentiment analysis. Students are required to pass Bloomberg Market Concepts, a 10-hour self-paced course that integrates data, news and analytics.

JOUR3286 Reporting Business and Financial News in Chinese (3 units)
This course teaches students to cover business and financial news in Chinese for different media, including print, radio and online. Students will learn the techniques of reporting, writing and editing business and financial news and feature stories. Particular attention will be put on reporting the performance of listed companies in Greater China and the region’s financial markets, including initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Students will also learn to uphold professionalism by abiding by a code of ethics for financial journalists.

JOUR3287 Social Media Content Management (3 units)
The technological affordances of social media are altering the nature of content dissemination and consumption by journalists, organisations, and the public (audiences). News and commercial organisations increasingly look toward social media platforms to gain audiences and revenue streams. This course takes an in-depth look at the use of social media for content management by journalists and digital marketing professionals. The aim of the course to let students understand social media content management as a dynamic and strategic planning process. Through course materials and hands-on practice of digital skills, students will learn in a practical learning environment. Relevant case studies will also be shared so that students can identify the mistakes and successes behind different social media campaigns.

JOUR4005 Theory and Practice of Journalism in Greater China (3 units)
This course provides a systematic interpretation of the structure, performance and problems of the press in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan since 1949. It offers theoretical and historical analyses of major issues related to the press and news reporting. While institutional constraint and inertia in the development of journalism are accounted for, the agents and dynamics of change are identified and discussed. It will enable students to understand the role of the press and its potential changes in the context of China’s continuing development.

JOUR4007 Research Methods in Communication (3 units)
As a communication professional, you may have to conduct research yourself, commission research from others or evaluate the methods and results of others’ research. These needs mean that you will need to understand not only how research is done but also what distinguishes good research from bad. A practical way to think about research is to assume that based on research findings you will be recommending that your organization launch a million dollar communication campaign, or a new magazine or social media initiative. What would you want to know about the research on which you are basing your recommendation?

This course is designed to introduce you to the basics of communication research and to develop your ability to conduct and evaluate research. We will look at the methods commonly used in human communication research and the assumptions that underpin research design. There will be an opportunity to design and implement research projects, to analyse data and to report results in the professional format expected of scholarly researchers.

JOUR4015 Journalism Internship (0 unit)
All Journalism students are encouraged to undertake a nongraded and zero-credit professional internship. The internship is normally of at least two months full-time employment or professional practice during the summer between the third and fourth years but it can be a minimum of 160 hours of work. Students are required to conform to all reasonable requirements of their internship employer. Both the employer and the student file reports with the Journalism Department after the internship. Chinese Journalism students are expected to take their internship in the Chinese-language media or broadcast news organizations and International Journalism students to take theirs in the English language media. The department will do its best to help students who wish to intern overseas but cannot promise help with travel or other expenses.

JOUR4017 China Reporting and Writing (3 units)
China Reporting is one of the most crucial and difficult areas for journalists to cover. This intensive course provides analytical tools and practical techniques for students to understand and report the rising power in-depth. This course can also be treated as a Pre-Job training for future China-Beat reporters for local media outlets. Therefore, students are required to study and decode first-handed information and official documents, then write up stories in a professional manner especially for local audience.
This course will acquaint students with important events in the PRC since its founding in 1949, with heavy focus on the changes and development since Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of CPC took office after the 18th Party Congress in 2012. Understanding of and ways to report the mechanism and operation of CPC, the gist of “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”, the social control system, the legal reform, the civil society and Beijing’s Hong Kong policy constitute the meat of the courses. This is an elective course available to all Journalism Option students.

JOUR4025 Critical Studies of Media (3 units)
The purpose of the course is to enhance students’ awareness of media roles in personal life and social development. It aims at developing students’ critical ability and media literacy to understand the political economy of media production, deconstruct media messages, and explore the cultural impact of the media. This course advances a systematic scrutiny of critical theory and its application in studies of media and culture. The first part provides the historical contour of critical theory from the emergence of the Frankfurt School in 1930s to theoretical advances by Jurgen Habermas after the Second World War. The second part looks into how critical theory is extended to apply to the analysis of media and cultural productions in contemporary capitalist world. The third part assesses its value and limitation in explaining and interpreting media developments and their implications. Special attention will be given to news media and journalism.

JOUR4045 Entrepreneurial Journalism (3 units)
The arrival of the internet has opened up the practice of the news to many non-journalistic actors, ending control over journalists’ employment by the traditional mass media – newspapers and broadcasters run by tycoons and governments – and opening up the way for small, independent news businesses. In this changing milieu, journalism entrepreneurship, once represented by the precariously employed freelance minority, is becoming a mainstream career choice. This course aims to prepare students at undergraduate level with the basic knowledge and skills needed to negotiate this new digital media space while upholding journalistic standards and ethics, as well as working in a collaborative environment.

JOUR4046 Integrated Data-driven Storytelling (3 units)
As an advanced level core course of the Data and Media Communication Concentration, this course aims to integrate knowledge and skills of data-driven storytelling in the field of media and communication. Special focus will be placed on the industrial production process of all aspects of techniques, including searching, collecting, analysing, interpreting, and visualizing data from various sources. The design and aesthetic components in the data-driven storytelling process will also be covered. In additional to the traditional teaching learning activities, such as class demonstrations, individual assignments, collaborative projects and guest lectures, the course will also adopt the case study approach and perform reverse-engineering on classic and cutting-edged data-driven storytelling examples. Critical reflection on the overuse and abuse of big data and relevant ethical and legal controversies will be addressed as well. By the end of the semester, students are expected to produce a data-driven narrative project, such as, but not limited to, data-driven journalistic report, data visualization layouts, data-driven business analysis, and computational social science research reports.

JOUR4855 Honours Project in Data and Media Communication (3 units)
This course is open to students of interdisciplinary concentration “Data and Media Communication” in the Department of Journalism. In this course students will integrate knowledge, skills and expertise learned and developed in previous years of study by individually producing either a substantial piece of produced Data Journalism; or an academic dissertation in data and media communication. In either case the Honours Project is a means of engaging the student in a piece of independent research that provides an analytical and critical evaluation of an idea. The course tests research and professional skills as well as the ability to apply theoretical insights.

JOUR4865 Honours Project in Chinese Journalism (3 units)
In this course students integrate theory and practice by either producing a substantial piece of individually produced Journalism/Broadcast Journalism; or an academic dissertation. In either case the Honours Project is a means of engaging the student in a piece of independent research that provides an analytical and critical evaluation of an idea. The course tests research and professional skills as well as the ability to apply theoretical insights.

JOUR4885 Honours Project in International Journalism (3 units)
In this course students integrate theory and practice by either producing a substantial piece of individually produced Journalism/Broadcast Journalism; or an academic dissertation. In either case the Honours Project is a means of engaging the student in a piece of independent research that provides an analytical and critical evaluation of an idea. The course tests research and professional skills as well as the ability to apply theoretical insights.
