International Media Salon 130: Covering the US: from racial unrest and protests to the presidential election

Kurtis Lee is a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, who frequently reports on the nation’s debate over guns, marijuana legalization and how Trump administration policies are affecting states. He has filed reports from the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., chronicled Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency and explored issues surrounding voter ID laws. Most recently, he has covered the Breonna Taylor protests in Louisville, Kentucky and the impact of racial unrest and coronavirus. Prior to joining The Times in August 2014, Lee worked at the Denver Post where he covered state and national politics. He’s also reported from the scenes of destructive wildfires and mass shootings and was a member of the Post staff that won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage of the Aurora theater shooting. He’s a graduate of Temple University.

International Media Salon 129: Covering conflict in the wake of the Arab Spring from Libya to Syria

Nicole Tung is a freelance photojournalist, born in Hong Kong. She graduated from New York University in 2009, and contributes to international publications and NGOs, mainly covering the Middle East as well as stories in Africa and Asia. She has covered the conflicts in Libya, Syria, and Iraq focusing on the plight of civilians and the aftermath of war, while exploring the rising violence against women in Turkey, and documenting protests in her native Hong Kong. She is based in Istanbul.

International Media Salon 127: The Challenges of Working as a Journalist in an Authoritarian Country

Ilya Kuzniatsou has been working for more than 20 years as a freelance video journalist, video producer and fixer for international news media organizations, including Deutsche Welle, BBC, ARD, ZDF, ABC, Al Jazeera and Vice. Kuzniatsou has covered conflict, politics, features, business and protest video stories in his home country of Belarus and neighboring post-Soviet countries of Russia, Ukraine, the Baltics and Central Asia. In 2014 he spent more than a month in Ukraine covering the stalemate conflict in Russian-occupied Donetsk for German news channel ARD. He was the production manager for the 2009 Russian-language short film, The Door, which was nominated for a 2010 Academy Award.
